The Department of Quantum field theory was founded in the late 1960s (as the
Department of Quantum field theory and quantum statistics until September 2015).
For more than 30 years since its foundation, it was headed by the prominent physicist
Academician Efim Fradkin. Under his supervision, the Department concentrated on
fundamental problems in elementary particles, quantum field theory, and quantum
statistics.
Currently, the Department members study a range of problems in quantum field
theory, superstring theory, and mathematical physics, including quantum theory in strong
fields, quantization of general gauge theories, conformal field theory in various dimensions,
the AdS/CFT correspondence, higher-spin gauge field theory, superstrings in nontrivial
backgrounds, infinite-dimensional symmetries, and related problems
